What is your favorite memory from the World Business Dialogue so far?
You know the feeling, when you believe you should do something. But then there is this quiet voice inside your head, giving you reasons and arguments why you might postpone your idea or action. But deep inside you are actually aware about the fact that you should just do it.
Deciding to do it, instead of just thinking about it – that kind of spirit I strongly believe can be found in every generation of the WBD. But back to the question.
During the week of the conference, there was this little problem the R&C-Team was aware of. What might happen if there is a panel, but no moderator? A question that should definitely be answered. In our case it was answered two days before the panel took place after I was asked to do it. The preparation for this panel in combination with organizing the program was the most challenging and impressive situation I was in so far.
But what made this memory so special, was not the panel itself – but the support from the team. Everyone who could contribute something to the panel did so – both thematically and mentally. Watching the people around me, believing that this would work – made me believe that it could really work out, although I had lots of thoughts about what might go wrong. Imagine staying on the stage and forgetting the name of a speaker, just to mention one.
But to make long story short, it was a great panel – and more importantly I have never had the feeling that it was solely a personal challenge, but an opportunity to reach the summit with the spirit of a great team.
“Deciding to do it, instead of just thinking about it – that kind of spirit I strongly believe can be found in every generation of the WBD.”“
Are you still in contact with others from the conference – what’s your connection to them?
There are quite a few, who became great friends. It´s interesting that regarding the personality the WBD offers a “Platform”, which connects people based on a similar mindset. It might be true that the personalities of the people here can differ in a great way. But there is this common ground – this common ground to create something. This mindset extends the time beyond the year at the WBD and offers the opportunity to catch up with the people again in the future.
“But there is this common ground – this common ground to create something.”
Has the World Business Dialogue impacted your career path?
The way we worked at the WBD made me aware of the meaning of people, instead of e.g. the name of a company. Furthermore, it emphasized the importance of a good team and the personalities within it. After my time at the WBD I could definitely say, that I am looking for people who share the same mindset and the right intrinsic motivation in order to create something for the better. It made me realize that I want a great team around me in the future, avoiding people who have a missing understanding of corporate-culture for instance.
With this mindset I looked around, searching for opportunities which include team spirit, autonomy, responsibility, variety and a goal. That´s how I found myself in the StartUp-Context.
Were you able to generate value through your participation?
Definitely – but doing WBD just for the CV should not be your main motivation. For me that was never the primer reason to spend more than a year in this organization. It is more essential that this time offers you the opportunity to make an impact for several hundred people around the globe. This also means you deal with a great part of responsibility. Sharing & realizing – but also defending & pitching your ideas. WBD can shape your personality and might give you hints about the direction you want to follow afterwards. And of course, as a nice side-effect, it´s great to have it on the CV.

What are you up to now?
After spending half a year in a young R&D-Company in Munich, I will be back in Cologne for my last year finishing my Bachelor´s in Business Psychology. Beside I work at the Digital Hub Cologne as StartUp Coordinator.
But two more things:
1. WBD offers you an opportunity, which can contribute a lot to your personal development & the bunch of people you´ll meet might play a big role in your life.
2. If you want to give it a try but you hear this quiet voice in your head – cut it & just do it – it´s worthy.
